What is Urtau?
The Urtau Tauernas started its operation more than 40 years by our parents. Since then we have always worked hard to offer quality products and services.
Our menu was originally based on small dishes (known as tapas) such as tripe, snails, tortilla, pork feet, etc. Over the years this has evolved into a broader selection. Now you can find over 50 different pinchos, dried meat platters, cheese, home made dishes all accompanied by an extensive wine list heavily populated with red wines, but with an ample number of white and rosé wines. Moreover, we offer a nice selection of cider (known as txakoli).
Our restaurants convey our integral principals of high quality client relations, service and products. All of our restaurants have terraces where you can spend a relaxed Urtau Moment family or friends and are located in historic sites of the various municipalities (Arties - Bossòst - Vielha - Palamos).
Would you like to learn more about the history of Urtau Tauerna?
The first tauerna was opened in Arties (Naut Aran, Val d’Aran) in 1963 by our parents, Rafael and Montserrat. Rafael was employed in an electric company and Montserrat had been working as a cook from an early age.
At first, our menu was based on typical dishes and Montserrat’s homemade specialties such as tripe, snails, tortilla or pork trotters. In 1990 this all changed when a young chef who worked with us, encouraged us to complement our offer with skewer based “pinchos”. Given the positive reception to this introduction of pinchos we now have over 50 different options along with the remainder of our delicious home made dishes.
In 2001 we opened our second restaurant in the village of Bossòst (Baix Aran) and in 2009 the third in Vielha (Miei Aran). Given the fact that there was little more room fro growth in Aran, in the summer of 2011 we opened our fourth restaurant in Palamos (Costa Brava, Girona). Here we hope to continue growing and learning.
